An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a device that may treat certain dangerous fast ventricular rhythms. Our practice provides cardiac device care, including defibrillator-related follow-up questions. Whether an ICD is recommended is individualized.
What an ICD is
An ICD can monitor the heart rhythm and, if a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia is detected, may deliver pacing or a shock to try to restore a safer rhythm. Some ICDs also provide pacemaker functions.
An ICD is not the same as a pacemaker, though the devices can look similar and both require follow-up.
When an ICD might be discussed
Physicians may discuss an ICD after certain dangerous arrhythmias, or in some patients with reduced heart pumping function, based on guidelines and individual risk. Those decisions require a full clinical evaluation.

Evaluation and counseling
If an ICD is considered, a physician should explain why, what the device can and cannot do, and possible complications. Heart failure status, prior rhythms, and other conditions may all matter.
Device care
People who already have an ICD typically need scheduled checks. Contact the office about defibrillator device care. Do not use the website for alerts, shocks, or urgent symptoms — call the office or emergency services as appropriate.
When to contact a physician
Call for appointments or device-care questions. After a shock, follow the instructions you were given; if you feel unwell or were not given instructions, seek urgent medical help. Call 911 for emergency symptoms.
