Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in Reseda, CA
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a specialized pacing approach that may be considered for some people with heart failure and a specific electrical pattern. It is not appropriate for everyone. Please call to ask about evaluation; confirm with the practice which services are offered.
What CRT is
CRT uses a device to pace more than one region of the heart so the ventricles may squeeze in a more coordinated way in selected patients. It is sometimes combined with defibrillator therapy (CRT-D) or used as a pacemaker (CRT-P).
A physician determines candidacy using heart function, EKG findings, symptoms, and other factors.
Why CRT may be discussed
CRT may be discussed when heart failure symptoms continue and the electrical system shows a pattern that suggests the ventricles are not contracting together. It is one possible tool among medications and other heart-failure therapies.
Evaluation
Evaluation typically involves echocardiography or other imaging, an EKG, and a review of guideline-directed medical therapy. Not every patient with heart failure benefits from CRT.
What patients can expect to ask
If CRT is considered, ask about goals, implant risks, follow-up, and how success is measured. Improvement is not guaranteed.
When to contact a physician
Call the office if you were referred to discuss a heart-failure device or rhythm care. For sudden worsening of breathing or chest pain, call 911.
