Syncope (or fainting) is a temporary loss of consciousness, with the inability to maintain postural tone. When patients lose consciousness, they may fall to the ground, sometimes sustaining injury. It is usually caused by inadequate blood flow to the brain. This inadequate blood flow is typically caused by transient hypotension (low blood pressure). Syncope can be related to stress, pain, dehydration, or medications. In addition, certain heart disorders can also cause syncope, such as heart valve disease, heart muscle disease, or abnormal fast or slow heart rhythms.
