The heart is located within the rib cage, under and slightly to the left of the breastbone (sternum). It approximately the size of a clenched fist. The lungs surround the right and left side of the heart.
Cardiomegaly is a condition in which the heart is larger than normal. It is usually detected by physical examination or imaging tests (such as X-ray). It may be caused by an abnormal thickening of the muscular walls of the heart (hypertrophy). It may also be caused by a weakening and dilation of the heart.
