Follow-up visits are an important part of your ongoing care after you receive an ICD/Pacemaker.
The first visit is 7-10 days after implant and includes evaluation of incision and removal of bandage. A full check of the pacemaker/ defibrillator and lead system by a pacemaker nurse specialist is done as well.
A six-week visit is required for patients who have received new leads. A full device check is done. This visit is important to ensure proper implantation of leads and to set the voltage of the leads to their permanent settings.
Routine pacemaker clinic visits are then every three months for people with an ICD and every six months for people with a pacemaker.
Patients with a pacemaker only will be taught at their first visit how to do a battery check over the telephone. This check is done by the patient every other month for the first three years of the device and every month thereafter. This TTM or Transtelephonic check is important to confirm battery status of the pacemaker.
Patients with an ICD/Pacemaker may also have the option of internet follow up from home. This depends on the device manufacturer.
